The Audition Process
The Marcsmen are continuously adding new performers to the performance chorus. To get a first-hand feel for the sound and culture of the chorus, male singers of any age are encouraged to visit 2-3 of our weekly rehearsals.
The Membership Process consists of:
The Vocal Assessment helps establish a minimum level of required musical ability from each member of the chorus. The assessment takes 15 - 20 minutes to complete and is conducted privately by 1-2 members of the Audition Team. There is no preparation required. The topics covered in the assessment are:
Rhythm and Choreography
Physical Emotion/Story Telling Ability
The performance quality of the chorus is dependent on the ability of each member to memorize the correct notes/words/choreography and exhibit contextual emotion for the pieces of music the ensemble performs. The chorus predominantly performs music arranged for 4-8 parts and it is very important for each singer to be able to "carry" his voice part even if he is surrounded by other vocal parts.
After successful completion of the Vocal Assessment, the Audition will be discussed and scheduled. The audition requires each membership candidate to prepare, memorize, and sing a specific section of music from two of the current repertoire pieces. The candidate will sing his part in a quartet in front of one or all of the following:
Visual Team Member(s)
Two 1-hour classes are conducted for membership candidates.
The Membership Classes are used to:
Provide a glimpse into chorus history
Discuss active member expectations
Provide a brief overview of the different organizational tiers in the Barbershop Harmony Society
Discuss time and financial investment
Provide answers for any questions that might arise
Once the Membership Classes and Audition have been successfully completed, each candidate fills out the application to become a member of our parent organization, the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). There are required dues with special membership rates for students as well as senior citizens. Dues may be paid annually or in monthly installments through a monthly bank draft. Once that application (accompanied by the appropriate dues) has been approved and processed, the candidate simultaneously becomes an official member of the Marcsmen Chorus, the Southwestern District, and the Barbershop Harmony Society.
To perform with The Marcsmen, each member is expected to:
Meet expected attendance requirements
Memorize all required repertoire/choreography within a reasonable but specific amount of time
Contribute positively to the musical, organizational, and social endeavors of the chorus
