Back-to-Back District Championships Sends the Marcsmen to 6th International Appearance

The Marcsmen Win Third District Championship

Dallas, TX (October 12, 2019) – The Marcsmen won their third, and back-to-back, Southwestern District chorus championship this past weekend in Dallas. With the win, the San Antonio-based a cappella chorus earned a berth to the 2020 Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Contest in Los Angeles next summer. It will be their sixth appearance on the international stage where they will look to improve upon their 11th place finish at the 2019 edition in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In addition to retaining the trophy for another year, the Marcsmen improved upon their 2018 district score, earning an 83.5 with 30 men on stage.

“I am ecstatic that we have earned the right to represent our city, our state, and our District at the International level” said chorus director Brent Dunavant, on winning back-to-back championships. “Even though the chorus faced some formidable obstacles in 2019, the guys persevered and scored our highest District Contest score ever.”

The Marcsmen were one of 10 choruses who participated in the Southwestern District contest. Other choruses competing hailed from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and various other Texas cities.

“We’re proud of our accomplishment as a chorus, but it’s amazing to see the growth of all the choruses and quartets in the Southwestern District” said visual team leader, Matt Cassi. “We expect to see good representation of the District in LA next summer.”

The Marcsmen will now turn their focus towards their holiday show, A Sign of Hope, on December 14th at James Madison High School in San Antonio. More information and tickets can be found at marcsmen.org/events.

Preparations for the international contest next summer are already underway. “The musical journey we will take in preparation for the International Contest is exciting to me” said Dunavant. “We learn and grow so much during that journey and it transfers well into our other musical efforts.”
